Morevna Project is an effort to create full-feature anime movie using Open Source software only.
Main goals:
- Promotion of Open Source software and its ideology.
- Testing and improving existing Open Source tools by giving appropriated feedback to developers and community.
- Validate Open Source tools as suitable for creation of professional good-looking animation.
- Provide content for other artists to learn from or to re-use, including documentation and tutorials.
Main production tools:
- Drawing, static images: GIMP, Krita, MyPaint.
- 2D animation (vectorization & tweening): Synfig Studio.
- 2D frame-by-frame animation: Pencil.
- 3D modeling, animation and video editing: Blender.
The story is based on the Russian fairy tale “Marya Morevna”. It is completely reworked to futuristic high-tech twist with a large amount of technobabble, expounded in a style specific to anime genre.
Screenplay: Russian, English (draft translation).
Most actual concept documentation is stored on the project wiki. It is a place for developing concepts, discussing them, and planning future project development.

Q: Is there any organization financing the project?
No. We have no organization supporting the project. But we have fundraising campaign started.
Q: Do you plan to publish sources of your project?
All footage source are published under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution License.

Las aplicaciones utilizadas en este trabajo son Blender (3D), Synfig studio (2D), Gimp y Krita (Imágenes estáticas). La historia esta basada en un cuento de hadas ruso llamado “Maria Morevna” solo que con un toque futurista. Hasta el momento el proyecto parece llevar un buen ritmo, y en la pagina se invita a contribuir al proyecto. Me parece una buena idea, no es la primera vez que se intenta hacer una película con soft libre, pero creo que si la primera de corte anime. Esperemos poder disfrutarla pronto. [...]

Hey, just wanted to point out that there is an awesome little freeware software package for old school frame by frame animation: Plastic Animation Paper (PAP). I understand if you want to use a pencil, but I believe that software package should be showcased as well.

Of course, Plastic Animation Paper is nice and free (as beer). But it’s not free as freedom – non open-source. That means we’re in jail if we use it – we can’t modify it for our needs, we can’t improve something if we don’t like. For the project of such scale it is very critical. That’s why free-but-non-opensource software tools are out of our scope.
